Heart of New York by Chris Close
Heart of New York by Chris Close
This was taken in December 2000 by Chris Close.
The iconic I 'heart' NY logo echoed in the cityscape with the twin towers still standing.
Limited edition of 3 only with one Artist's Proof
Armed with a 'pink slip' I was officially allowed 15 minutes to shoot from the top of The Empire State Building. It was taken 9 months before the twin towers were brutally felled. It was freezing so not many people were spending much time outside. 15 minutes turned into 2 hours. Even the security guards were frozen but bemused at the strange looking 6x17cm panoramic camera they let me stay on. Loading the film was tricky, my fingers could scarcely grip the rolls of film and with this camera you only get 4 shots per roll. Keeping it level too proved tricky.
It was December and New York was a buzz with the excitement of Christmas. People skating in Central Park, The Rockefeller Centre, The Flat Iron Building and horse drawn carriages.
I fell in love with this city. There is no where quite like it. Loud, brash, exciting, friendly, unfriendly. This is a city where things happen.
The detail in this picture is extraordinary and even the tiny figure of the Statue of Liberty can be seen way off in the distance.
